Summary of Ryan/Romney Budget and Policies

Jobs and the Economy

  • Ryan’s proposed budget would cripple the economy. His proposal slashes spending

that would lead to the loss of 1 million jobs in 2013 and eliminate more than 4 million jobs by the end of 2014

 Medicare

  • Ryan’s proposal replaces Medicare with vouchers for retirees to purchase insurance

This voucher caps the cost of healthcare insurance at $6,400 per year which could significantly increase out of pocket cost to seniors

  • His plan would raise the age of eligibility from 65 to 67

 Tax policy

  • Ryan’s plan cuts taxes by $4.6 trillion for corporations and upper income individuals which will explodes the deficit over the next ten years
  • Families earning over $1million would get a $300K tax cut
  • The tax burden on middle class families would increase up to nearly $2,000 per family
  • Ryan’s plan provides $40 billion tax subsidies to Big Oil companies

Social Security

  • Takes away survivor benefits to help families send children to college
  • Supports privatization of social security over time

 Education

  • Ryan’s proposal cuts $200 billion in Pell grants for more than 1 million low income students

Election Funding

  • Ryan/Romney plan works closely with billionaires like the Koch Brothers and other anonymous contributors encouraging unlimited funding for elections which undercuts our democracy

Women’s Issues

  • Ryan is an anti-choice extremist whose record shows he favors a ban on abortion even in the case of rape and incest
  • Ryan cosponsored a bill last year that could lead to outlawing certain types of contraception and in-vitro fertilization
  • Ryan supports extremist legislation of “personhood” that makes all abortions illegal
  • Ryan voted against the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act

Gay Rights

  • Ryan opposes gay rights and has voted against same sex marriage, and against repealing “don’t ask don’t tell”

Role of government

  • Paul Ryan is a devoted follower of Ayn Rand’s philosophy of “selfishness as a virtue” and wants to undercut the important role that government plays in providing a vital social safety net for the poor and unemployed in society
